The M\u00e9doc is one of the best playgrounds in France for a dog. Between the ocean and the estuary, you'll find hundreds of kilometres of trails through the pines, two large lakes and several nature reserves open to dogs on a lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We've picked 5 walks less than 30 minutes from Brach and Lacanau. For each one, you'll find the distance, duration, rules for dogs, and what guidebooks often forget to mention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rules to know in the forest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

From 15 April to 30 June, leads are compulsory off the main paths.<\/strong> A ministerial order of 16 March 1955, still in force, prohibits walking a dog off the lead away from forest paths during this period. It's the breeding season for mammals and ground-nesting birds. The fine can be up to \u20ac750.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rest of the year, the 100-metre rule.<\/strong> A dog is considered to be straying as soon as it is more than 100 metres from its owner or no longer under effective control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In nature reserves, leads all year round.<\/strong> The Cousseau and Hourtin reserves accept dogs, but only on a lead and on marked trails. Some areas may be closed: always check the signs at the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each walk in detail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1. \u00c9tang de Cousseau nature reserve (Lacanau)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Designated in 1976, the reserve covers 830 hectares between the coastal dunes and the Lacanau state forest. The trail crosses ancient dunes formed between 500 and 1000 AD, covered in holm oaks and strawberry trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Few people know that the reserve is home to Landes marine cows, a local breed that once roamed freely along the coast. Reintroduced in 1990, they maintain the marsh by grazing invasive vegetation. Keep your dog firmly on its lead if you meet them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From October to February, thousands of common cranes come here to winter from north-eastern Europe. You'll recognise them by their trumpeting call. Bikes are not allowed in the reserve: there's a bike park at the Lesperon entrance, 3 km from the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Sentier de la Berle (Lacanau town)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This short loop follows the Berle \u201ccraste\u201d (drainage ditch) to an observation hide on the shore of Lake Lacanau. It crosses the Vire Vieille, Vignotte and Batejin biological reserve, a back-dune wetland described as unique in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fun fact: crastes are drainage ditches dug into the sand. They became widespread after the 1857 law on draining the Landes, which made it possible to plant the maritime pine forest you walk through today. The walk starts near the old Lacanau town railway station, open from 1884 to 1978.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Canal trail (Carcans-Maubuisson)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This flat trail follows the canal linking Lake Carcans-Hourtin, France's largest natural freshwater lake, to Lake Lacanau. You'll pass a lock, a duck-hunting hide (\u201ctonne\u201d) and an observation point with a telescope. Ideal for an older dog or a puppy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Sentier des Rousserolles (Hourtin)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It lies within the Hourtin dunes and marshes nature reserve, the largest in Aquitaine at 2,151 hectares. Created in 2009 and managed by the French Forestry Office (ONF), it accepts dogs on a lead on its marked trails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take the detour to Pointe du Gaoul\u00e9ou for a 360\u00b0 view of the lake. In July, Dortmann's lobelia, a rare aquatic plant with pale blue flowers, blooms on the banks. Note: in winter, the path to the point can be flooded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good to know: on Lake Carcans-Hourtin (62 km\u00b2), dogs are banned from the lifeguarded swimming areas from 1 April to 30 September, even on a lead. They must be kept on a lead throughout the municipalities, and some Natura 2000 areas on the east shore are off-limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Forest tracks starting from La Villa de Louis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Turn right out of the villa, follow the Route de Lacanau, then head towards the woods. Long sandy, white-gravel paths open up a few minutes' walk away, quiet even in summer. It's the ideal daily walk, morning and evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Risks specific to the M\u00e9doc<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pine processionary caterpillars (January to April).<\/strong> The M\u00e9doc forest is a pine forest, and therefore a risk area. The caterpillars come down from the trees in procession mainly from February to April, peaking in March. Their stinging hairs remain dangerous even on a dead caterpillar or an empty nest. Contact with the tongue can cause necrosis within hours: rinse with cold water without rubbing and see a vet urgently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fire risk (summer).<\/strong> Fires and barbecues are strictly forbidden in the forest and around the lakes, as is throwing away cigarette ends. During droughts, check with the town hall or tourist office before heading into the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Insects and ticks.<\/strong> Tourist offices recommend long sleeves and insect repellent in the reserves. Remember a parasite treatment for your dog and check them after every walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heat.<\/strong> In July and August, go out before 10 am or after 6 pm. Oak-shaded trails, such as at Hourtin, stay cool even in midsummer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can I walk my dog off the lead in the M\u00e9doc forest?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Yes, outside the protected period, if it stays within 100 metres and under your control. From 15 April to 30 June, a lead is compulsory off the forest paths, and all year round in nature reserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does the Cousseau reserve accept dogs?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Yes, on a lead throughout the trail, according to the M\u00e9doc Atlantique tourist office. Check the signs at the entrance, as rules may change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the best season for hiking with your dog in the M\u00e9doc?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Autumn. It's mild, the cranes arrive at Cousseau from October, and the processionary caterpillar season is still a long way off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The canal trail at Carcans: 8 km of completely flat ground, which you can shorten by turning back at the lock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
